The first article to be posted is by Ray Ganders and is an important article on tires and tire safety.

Tire safety is an important everyday issue as you drive your car to work, shopping or for pleasure. If your tires are worn, underinflated or damaged form poor alignment you could be in big trouble.

TIRE SAFETY

We really don't give too much thought to the tires on our cars, we just get in and go. Tire maintenance is very important though, even keeping the proper amount of air in them will give you better gas mileage, so you need to keep an eye on the air pressure in them. They will loose about one to two pounds of air a month, less in the winter than in the summer. Keeping the air pressure at the recommended lbs allows your car to handle better too.

Checking your air pressure about once a month is recommended, older tires, maybe twice a month. First you need a tire gauge, which you can get just about anywhere with an automotive dept. and their very inexpensive. It's a tube shape about six inches long with a stick inside that pops out when you press it onto the stem on your tire and tells you how much air is in the tire. If your tire is supposed to have 32-24 PSI (pounds per square inch) of air, and the tire gauge reads 28, then you need to put some air into your tires.

Keeping the front end of your car aligned is another important factor on your front tires. You can tell if your car needs alignment if it pulls to the right or left too much. It's doesn't take much to knock your car out of alignment, hitting a pothole too hard can do it for you. This wears out front tires more than anything else. If your noticing that one tire is wearing out on the edge faster than it's supposed to, you may need your car aligned.

Another way your tires can wear out fast is if they become damaged somehow. This can happen anywhere you go. You can pick up a nail in your tire from anywhere, anytime. If it comes out before you notice, then you may get a slow leak in your tire. If this happens, your local tire shop can fix it, or you may be lucky and try a can of "fix a flat," if the hole is small enough, this may fix the problem. Tires not put on properly can cause vibration within your car at certain speeds. If this happens, take your car back and have them check it out for you.

Rotating your tires every 5 to 8 thousand miles will really give you long life from your tires. For some particular reason, one tire will wear out faster than the others on most cars, kind of like one shoe wearing out faster than the other one. By rotating your tires this will allow your tires to wear more evenly, thus giving them a longer life. Good tires are very expensive and many cars will only use a certain brand of tire. This is some kind of agreement between car manufacturers and tire companies. By keeping a eye out and taking care of your tires, you will be able to get a good deal of wear before you have to buy a new set of tires.
