Flex Fuel - E85-Are They For You?
By: Jack Cooper
Are Flex fuels-e85 for you?
With the car manufactures producing more and more flex fuel (e85) cars, are they for you? there 4 main things to take into account before buying one. 1. the cost of the vehicle will be higher. 2. the cost of flex fuel (at this point) is only about .25- .30 cheaper than reg gasoline. 3. you will get a mileage drop of 10%-15%. 4. The pumps for flrxfuel (e85) are few and far between right now.
So is it all worth it? The cost of a new hybird vehicle is $2,000.00-$3,000.00 more than a regular gas only vehicle, but the auto manufactures can implement the flexfuel capable vehicles for around $200.00 per vehicle on mass production. With the price of crude going up at an alarming rate the price of gasoline could be up to $4.00 - $5.00 a gallon with in the next 6 months to a year, depending on the world situation and the futures trading. The cost of flexfuel should stay the same or even drop as more is produced taking that .25-.30 cent saving to a possible $1.00-$2.00 per gallon saving. With the mileage drop with e85 at the present prices it equals out to aprox the same price as you are paying for gasoline, but with any price increase in crude oil and a possible drop in price of flexfuel the mileage drop will more tha offset itself. And as flexfuel gets more popular I.m sure it will improve and the mileage will increase. Even though there are few stations that pump flex fuel right now, as the demand goes up so will the amount of stations that will offer flexfuel. If you have a flexfuel vehicle now and want to use e85 make sure it is available close to you. I will have posted on my web site www.jtcbiz.com areas where you can get flexfuel.
So the final decision is really up to you. Write down all the pros and cons in your situation and make your decision from there. If you decide for flexfuel you will be helping us cut our dependence on foreign oil, every gallon of flex fuel is replacing a gallon of foreign bought refined gasoline. Flexfuel is also cleaner burning so it helps our enviorment, there is also no harmful residual left, as it is recycled into high grade food for cattle etc.
